People with stigmas divide their worlds into categories: o The Own o The Straights o The Wise Small world of people who are knowing and accepting of peoples’ stigmas, instead of looking down on them. To be considered the wise, it’s not just a matter of being knowing and accepting of a stigma in a theoretical way. These people have regular, personal contact with people who have stigmas. This idea of acceptance is not a one-way street—there also has to be acceptance on the part of the stigmatized group or individual. The Wise will be put to certain tests by people with stigmas. Tests to show that they can be trusted, that he or she won’t be giving away secrets about the stigmatized. If they pass the test, then they will gain acceptance… often in terms of being made an honorary member of the stigmatized group. o Along with this may come interactional citizenship.
