The technologies of a society affect the way a society can feed the people. Types of Societies (from most primitive, upward) o Hunting and Gathering Basic tools and dependent on nature for food supply Often nomadic Can’t afford to feed very many people, thus, their populations are rather small (about 50-125 people) To survive everyone has to be able to do the same thing Not much division of labor Low specialization and a low division of labor. Not much surplus Low stratification Strong collective conscious “we” instead of “I” o Horticulture Start growing own crops and domesticate animals They’re all hanging out in one place and not going all over the planet So they get buildings And because they’re hanging out they can get some specialized skills like jewelry makers . Some surplus Some stratification….Priests etc. o
