12 Gods and Goddesses 1) Zeus (Jupiter) He was the supreme ruler. He was the ruler of the sky, and the holder of the thunderbolt. He is not omniscient, for he can be deceived. He was known for his habit of falling in love with all women, mortal and immortal. (This angered Hera) He never helped a liar, or anyone who broke their oaths. His breast plate was the aegis. His bird was the eagle. His tree was the oak. His oracle was the Dodona in the land of the oak trees. 2) Hera (Juno) She was Zeus’s wife and sister. She was brought up by the titans Ocean and Tethys. She is the protector of marriage. She is superior in beauty. She took revenge on many of the women Zeus fell in love with. Ilithyia (Eileithyia) was her daughter. The cow and the peacock were sacred to her. Argos was her city. 3) Poseidon (Neptune) He was the ruler of the sea. He was Zeus’ brother, and second in importance. His wife was Amphitrite. He was often found in Olympus. He gave the first horse to man. Storm and calm were under his control. He carried a trident, and was known
