Marx's Theory of Human Nature “Species being”, “takes his species as his object, treats himself as a universal, and therefore a free being” 1. man is a species being 1. IE dog – not a species being because he could not identify his species as an object 1. marx argues that humans can identify with all of human kind 1. what it means to be a species being 1. thus they can have universal, free nature 2. IE you can worry about people in africa, you can identify with rest of human kind 2. humankind at beginning of history, was powerless, because overawed by nature like beasts 1. at the mercy of nature, powerless against it 2. nature to marx – a violent thing 3. a division of labor to develop naturally 1.
