Ethylene oxide is produced by partial oxidation of ethylene: 2C 2 H 4 + O 2 2 C 2 H 4 O Complete oxidation occurs as an undesired side reaction C 2 H 4 + 3 O 2 2CO 2 + 2 H 2 O Ethylene, oxygen and nitrogen are placed in a batch reactor, with an initial composition of 10 mol% C 2 H 4 , 12 mol% O 2 and 78 mol% N 2 . The reactor is heated. After some time, the reactor is cooled so that essentially all the water is condensed. The reactor is opened and the gases are sampled. All of the oxygen is gone and the ethylene concentration is 5.1 mol%. What is the fractional conversion of ethylene, the selectivity of ethylene for the partial oxidation reaction, and the yield of ethylene oxide from ethylene? Problem 2 (Murphy 4.17). A synthetic fiber plant uses a variety of volatile solvents. An analysis of the waste solvent vapors from one plant showed that the gas contained 20 mol% CH 4 , 20 mol% CS 2
