Running head: CRITICAL INCIDENT PAPER 1 Identify Jack, who is a new counselor and recently licensed, has no experience in leading a psychotherapy group for men who have been convicted of pedophilia. He accepts this new role, which is out of his scope of practice and there is no supervision to aid him or guide him with this group nor provide wisdom, support, accountability and ideas. The primary duty of a counselor, to do no harm, is not rationalized here by Jack’s choice to lead this group. His ethical and moral compass does not reflect the ACA Code of Ethics. Summarize A.4.a. Avoiding Harm , Counselors should avoid harming their clients, trainees and research participants and to resolve any unavoidable harm with proof showing their efforts and all attempts. A.9.b. Protecting Clients , within a group, counselors take safety precautions to protect each member physiological, emotional, and psychological trauma. C.2.a. Boundaries of Competence , counselors practice only within their boundaries of practice based on their education, training, supervised experience, and researched knowledge. Act For the safety of each member of the group, Jack must be reported to the individual that runs the agency of the group, which the friend mentioned or to the board based upon the state that this has occurred in. Another resolve would be to speak with Jack and request that he terminate the group, immediately. Each member can possibly be referred to another counselor or agency for group therapy so they are not harmed and can still benefit from a group setting.
