Ryan Hayes Jenny HST 197 Written Assignment 4 10/30/08 1 Crone’s point in the text “It is in this world that we happen to find ourselves, have ambitions, act, suffer, feel confused and try to find a meaning to it all”, pretty much sums up why religion exists (Crone 132). Without meaning, The Pilgrimage, people who dress poorly for God (Al-Ghazali 99), or fast or donate to charity (Al-Ghazali 90), would all be worthless deeds because it does not mean anything. All the laws for marriage, like marriage contracts (for example women having the ability not approving a marriage [Ibn Hanbal 93]), would not matter, and men would still be wild animals today. 2 The Hajj is when a Muslim is required in their lifetime to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once. Fasting and dressing poorly are some of the things they have to do in order to receive submission from God. Yes, al-Ghazali was extremely concerned with trading during The Pilgrimage.
