Ryan Hayes HST 197 Written Assignment 5 11/13/08 1) Yes, the Song of Roland does provide some ideas on their value-systems. They strongly believed that the outcome of a physical abuse or action would determine whether somebody was innocent or not. If you were thrown into a pond and you floated, you would be considered guilty because pure water does not accept a guilty person (Roland 168). In the story, the lord Ganelon was accused of killing 20,000 men and betraying the king’s nephew (Roland 168). The king said that the fate of the lord and his followers would be in a fight between Ganelon’s warrior Pinabel and Thierry (Roland 169-170). The 30 people that pledged as followers on each side had to wait for the outcome of the battle; whoever lost, all of those people had to kill them all (Roland 170, 172). When Thierry won, the man in charge of killing all the people had to make sure that none of Ganelon’s followers got away, otherwise he would be killed (Roland 172).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
