MGT 4471 27 March 27, 2011 A Tale of Two Cultures What is culture? According the Dictionary.com, culture means the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc. (Dictionary) The people within an organization are the primary source of culture. Culture is also known to motivate employees because norms and values encourage behavior for goal achievement. When different cultures are introduced to newcomers in a business it helps motivate employees to work and increase the organization effectiveness. The ultimate source of organizational culture is the people who make up the organization. (Jones) Southwest’s and Value Line’s cultures differ so sharply because Southwest’s culture is marked by good customer service and management teamwork with employees.
