Mid Term Exam MGT 4471 Organization Development eCampus Answer 5 of the 6 questions below. Each response is worth 3 points. Exam total is 15 points toward your final grade. Name 1. Why does unethical behavior occur? Give recommendations for creating an ethical organization and the role an individual plays in making it successful. Personal Ethics People learn ethical principles and moral codes as they mature as individuals in a society. Ethics comes from sources like family and friends, places of worship, education, professional training, and organizations of all kinds. From these examples, people learn to differentiate right from wrong in a society. Sometimes managers in an organization may come to believe any actions that promote or protect the organization are more important than any harm the organization does to others. Outside Pressure Studies have shown that the likelihood of a person’s engaging in unethical or criminal behavior is much greater when outside pressure exists for that person to do so. When employees are under the threat of losing their jobs, they may engage in unethical behaviors to satisfy shareholders. The social costs of unethical behavior are very hard to measure, but they can be easily seen over the long run in the form of mismanaged, top- heavy, and overly bureaucratized organizations that become less innovative, spending less and less n research and development and more and more on advertising or managerial salaries. Recommendations for creating an ethical organization would be to put a code of ethics in the workplace and encourage leaders to model desired behaviors because they are an important step toward creating and ethical organization.
