Mid Term Exam MGT 4471 Organization Development eCampus Answer 5 of the 6 questions below. Each response is worth 3 points. Exam total is 15 points toward your final grade. 1. Why does unethical behavior occur? Give recommendations for creating an ethical organization and the role an individual plays in making it successful. Unethical behavior occurs because of personnel ethics, self-interest, and outside pressures. By personnel ethics I mean the way that one was raised and doesn’t know any different. They learn what is right and wrong as they grow and by watching others around them. By self-interest I mean that you choose to do what is best for them-selves even though it could cause harm to others and be unethical. By outside pressures I mean that you are more likely to do something that you normally wouldn’t do when something like incentives or someone is telling you that it’s ok. Some recommendations for creating an ethical organization would be to implement an incentive program for those that are caught doing something that is ethical and the opposite for those that are caught doing something unethical. Many people learn by watching, so make sure management is doing everything ethically correct to be great role models for employees. The role an individual plays in making it successful is by understanding how important his role is in the organization. The individual has to live by the ethical values of the organization in order for everyone to see that they work. 2. Compare and contrast Centralization versus Decentralization of Authority. Which do you think is more effective in today’s global economy? Why? Centralization is when the organization needs to make decisions that matter come from top management or the highest levels in the hierarchy. Decentralization is when the organization needs to make decisions that matter and start new projects can come from everyone in the hierarchy. There are advantages and disadvantages to both levels of authority though. The advantage of centralization authority is that it allows the top managers to arrange the organizations functions and stay oriented towards its goals. One of the disadvantages is that the top managers can become over whelmed with their work and the decision making and make mistakes that can cost the organization in the long run. If the organization becomes too centralized with the higher level mangers making all the decisions, then the managers in the
