Commercial Broadcasting Is Created I. 3 Reasons to Study Early Radio Key moment for understanding what would come and what is happening now. Institutions that are still relevant now were established at this time. NBC, ABC, FCC Moment where advertising based system was created/ determined. TV and radio primarily supported by ads Early radio was a key birth period of many of the genres that exist day. Situation comedy, serialized dramas, variety shows (SNL) II. Early Radio Technology 1. Transduction – Process by which sound (and images later) is translated into an electrical pattern. Sound waves Diaphragm Waves 2. Modulation – process by which that electrical signal gets superimposed onto radio waves that then carry it through the air. Understanding of the Electric Spectrum / the ether was key to the creation of radio 3. AM & FM AM – modulate the amplitude/ height. All radio was AM until 1930’s FM – frequency. Modulate the length between peaks in waves. Edwin Armstrong discovered FM, although RCA suppressed this discovery until it re-emerged in the 1960’s. FM has superior sound quality, a richer and cleaner tone, no buzz or hiss. One advantage of AM was that signals could go much further. 4. Analog (vs. Digital) B. Key Technological Developments 1. Electronic experimentations 2. Telegraphy and telephony 1840’s – discovered how to transduct sound (Morse code) into electrical signal, but no modulation. First time communication was severed from transportation, it was no longer dependent on it. Limitations on communication are decreased Telephony – 1870’s – discovered the ability to trandsuct the human voice 3. Wireless Telegraphy & Marconi – 1890’s rush to discover modulation. Telephony in 1900’s. Inventors tended to be merely hobbyists, they weren’t corporate employees paid to experiment with things in labs or other sponsored settings. Research was more collaborative too. Building steps of inventions. a. Spark gap device Allowed him to modulate. Wanted to make $ on this, so first went to Italian gov’t, then Great Britain who were much more interested. Great Britain was more dependent on ships…spark gap device made ship to shore and ship-to-ship communication possible. Also, helped communication with far flung colonies.
