Hill Patrick Hill Journalism 101 H Mr. Tobin 1 February 2010 McCarthyism Exposed McCarthyism was running wild in the 1950s. The U.S.S.R. and communism was spreading throughout out the world and democracy was being questioned, however Senator McCarthy thought it necessary to extinguish any rumor of communism in the United States. Americans were being investigated for the slightest connection to communism for the fear of being a Soviet Union spy. McCarthy had become not a protector of democracy but an enemy to society. Citizens were in jeopardy of losing jobs, being put in jail, losing family members all because of McCarthy. McCarthy was using the media to spread his faulty news and rumors. It the medias responsibility to inform the citizens between what is fiction and nonfiction. Edward Murrow and Fred Friendly should indeed “define the real McCarthyism,” as said by John Herbers, by producing more broadcasts that deal directly with McCarthy. Edward Murrow and Fred Friendly understood that McCarthy was deceiving the public
