Supply chain management when a firm is managing “upstream” and “downstream” value-added flows of materials, final goods, and related information among suppliers, the company, resellers, and final consumers. The logistics manager’s task is to coordinate activities of suppliers, purchasing agents, marketers, channel members and customers. It is essentially the way the company interacts with resellers and customers to improve the performance of the entire Progressive system. In the Progressive case, the company interacts both directly with customers as well as indirectly through agents which is the traditional way of selling insurance. The company decided to sell direct based on consumer demand and consumers were buying direct in other industries.
