Working Definitions for NOP “Politics” broadly defined: “The habits, norms, rules, or laws that communities enact and enforce, in order to promote peaceful coexistence and their own collective well-being; AND the processes by which communities arrive at these habits, rules, norms, or laws .” 1 The “political” is a contested term itself, but broadly speaking it usually refers to the ideas/concepts/questions related to… power and authority : arbitrary power versus legitimate power example: why do you obey authority? What makes authority legitimate? Illegitimate? freedom : individual and collective example: not simply thinking about freedom as license—doing whatever I want, but thinking about freedom in the context of constraint…if we did not have constraint everyone would have far less freedom… example: traffic laws… democracy : direct or representative example: radical democracy—everyone participates equally or representative justice and injustice
