Here we can clearly see that the oxidation number of the copper is reduced from 2+ to 0 whereas the oxidation number for zinc is increased from 0 to 2+. For this reaction two electrons are transferred from each zinc atom to each copper ion to create the zinc ion and the copper neutral atom. Zinc is oxidized and copper is reduced.
