Western Civ Exam Outlines 1- Explain how Rome became a Republic with provinces, and how and why it transformed from a Republic to an Empire. Discuss the various influences and factors involved in these cultural and political developments. Finally, what did Augustus do or not do to achieve this transformation. -The Roman Republic lasted from 287-27 -became a Republic with Lex Hortensia (Laws of Hortensius)-287, created laws that governed everyone, not just plebeians. –veto was taken away. –the main body now has power, thus a REPUBLIC -The Senate was the most powerful in the government, also members became extremely wealthy. -The Provinces were uneven and some were run very poorly -The poorer Italians, -some of the low level famers could not make enough money and they lost their land, -because of this they came into the cities in large numbers and created an unbalance in government. –they used their votes to elect the leader who promised them the most. -The Gracchi Brothers
