ESSAY 1 Early M.A. = 500 – 1000 High M.A. = 1000 – 1300 Late M.A. = 1300 – 1500 Italian Renaissance = 1300 – 1500 Early Middle Ages population trends: Low population, scattered across Europe, self- sufficient. Causes: Colder climate, made growing season shorter = less food. Less food = less people. Self-sufficient because shorter growing season meant everybody had to farm to get the most out of the land. ALSO, threatened with unpredictable invasions. Effects: The Feudal system of GOVERNMENT was developed as a result of the need for protection and economic aid. Feudal system meant that people were guaranteed to work for land, allowing noble class to focus on other things. Also established connections throughout land so in spite of separation, it was easy and quick to put an army together anywhere, allowed them to better protect themselves from invasion. This new Feudal CULTURE, of having connections throughout land and lower class working for land while upper class focused on government and other things, created better economy. High Middle Ages population trends:
