Key terms and possible ID questions: Clientism: The PRI would use incentives such as jobs, political opportunities, land, (basically material goods) in order to secure their votes. They would garner the support of small groups such as the labor unions, peasant groups, and groups of small business owners who would vote for the PRI and in turn the PRI would provide these incentives (carrots). Import Substitution: Is a trade and economic policy based on the premise that a country should attempt to reduce its foreign dependency through the local production of industrialized products. Used by Mexico and Iran. Theory : industrialize and protect national companies until they had reached a level of development in which they were able to compete in the global market, after which those countries adopted a free market economy. Rentier Effect: When resource rich companies would use the wealth accumulated from exports to greatly reduce or abolish taxes on citizens. This relieved social pressure, and
