Jennifer Smith English 111 3 October 2010 Prejudice Spray Tan This cartoon is addressing the issue of prejudice towards ethnicity in the state of Arizona. In April of 2010, Arizona put a new law into place stating that a person of Hispanic decent has the potential to be asked to present immigration papers due only to suspect of the police. Many US citizens are appalled by this change and have been expressing their views of it ever since Governor Jan Brewer signed the bill this spring. President Obama told the press that the Arizona law threatened “to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.” Opponents believe that this move is an “open invitation for harassment and discrimination against Hispanics regardless of their citizenship status,” as stated by the New York Times. Protests against this bill have been breaking out in the streets as the immigrants and advocates of the illegal grow more and more upset about how this new law brings forth prejudice against all hispanics on American soil. Using a spray tan can to illustrate how if a person has dark skin they have more of a chance to be pulled over is a comical way of saying this new bill is unethical. It says that it does not matter the kind of person somebody might be, it only depends on the color of their skin to determine if they can be an illegal suspect and therefore be questioned.
