Question 3Explain the concepts of enablementand re-ablementin relation to meeting personal support needs. (300–330 words)Enablement is an intervention by which the health care provider recognizes, promotes and enhances client’s ability to control their health and life. An abundant health literature suggests that enablement is associated with good outcomes. An enabling approach starts from premise that people with personal support needs have capacity to make gains in their physical, social and emotional well-being and can continue to live autonomously and independently in the community if positively supported to do so. It means building on a person’s strengths, capacity and goals to help them remain independent in their daily living tasks. It is an approach that actively promotes independence. The NSW Department of Human Services describes the approach as focussing on what the person can do and wants to be able to do, not just on what they are unable to do at present. It offers people the opportunity to be actively involved in identifying goals that are important and meaningful to them and to participate alongside their support worker to achieve their goals.
