Management Across Cultures: Challenges and Strategies (paperback). Richard M. Steers, Carlos J. Sanchez-Runde, and Luciara Nardon. Cambridge University Press, 2010. 2. Readings. These will be shared by email or on Blackboard; or just outlined in class. 3. Revelant websites will include A) diversityInc.com; B) nationalgeographic.com; C. nytimes.com/diversityandinclusion; D) stanford.edu; E) geert-hofstede.com. Seminar Mission Globalization creates a need to deal effectively with people from various cultures. The mission of our seminar is to help prepare us for challenges inherent in such situations by working to achieve six objectives (below). These objectives derive from critical distinctions between masters and novices or experts: novices tend NOT to see, understand, or employ meaningful patterns -- experts tend to overuse patterns. (1) Distinguish relevant LEVELS OF SIMILARITY AND DIFFERENCE among jumans, both individually and collective. (2) Increase awareness of, and ability to meaningfully employ, valid CULTURAL PATTERNS that define cultural identities and cross-cultural differences. (3) Clarify OUR OWN CULTURAL IDENTITIES and explore how these influence the lenses we use to interpret the world, and the choices and actions that follow (often subconsciously). (4) Examine how learned cultural patterns create significant MANAGEIRAL CHALLENGES AS WELL AS OPPORTUNITIES . (5) Expand our REPERTOIRE OF COMPETENCIES to improve the quality of interactions in situations that involve multiple cultures. (6) Identify contextual LEVERAGE POINTS that can increase managerial effectiveness in cross-cultural work assignments. Performance Requirements 5. EXAMS (20% midterm; 20% final ). Exams will include assessments of BOTH individual of understanding, B) representative coverage of material, C) insightful applications, & D) professional/creative presentation. 2. TEAM BEHAVIOR (including presentations; 20%). Students must learn* how to work on teams constructively, building a foundation of competencies to apply to cross-cultural of understanding , B) relevant connections to seminar, C) engagement of peers, D) insight among teammates.
