WHAT JUSTICE MEANS TO ME 2 What justice means to me… This is the question that The Republic strives so hard to answer. Socrates, Cephalus, Glaucon, Polemarchus, and countless others engage in the debate to find an acceptable definition of justice. In this paper I will attempt to craft my own definition of what I believe true justice and the just man to be.

WHAT JUSTICE MEANS TO ME 3 What justice means to me… Socrates uses a model of his perfect city to lay out his definition of justice. His city is composed of three classes- gold, silver, and bronze/iron. Jobs are given based on class. The gold class is the guardians and rulers of the city. Silver is the auxiliaries. Lastly, the bronze/iron class is basically the working class of the city. Everyone works for the common good of the city and there is little surplus and few luxuries. Socrates also believes the city and its citizens should possess certain attributes. These qualities are moderation, courage, and prudence with justice being that which is left over (The Republic, 111.) It is suggested then by Socrates that justice is perhaps the perfect balance of moderation, courage, and prudence. I feel this is a pretty fair statement by Socrates; however I feel there are more characteristics to a just man. The Bible often speaks of what characteristics a man should possess. In fact, the Bible list out these attributes and refers to them as the fruits of the spirit. These characteristics are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23.) I believe if a man is to be truly just then he should possess or at least try his hardest to possess all of these characteristics. A just man should show love to those around him. He
