Alysse Johnson Natures Salvation Final Paper #1 Chris McCandless from Into The Wild by John Krakauer and Edna Pontellier from The Awakening by Kate Chopin are two characters that wish to leave society behind them. In Edna’s case she wants to leave society and its delegation of particular roles behind her so that she can find herself. Chris disagrees with society’s control over people and himself as well. There dislike of society causes Edna and Chris to retreat back into themselves and away from what they don’t like about the world. Although, both characters disagree with society they still feel the need to interact with people at some points before they retreat away from them once again. The way they retreat from society compared to each other is slightly different. Edna retreats away from her family and the role society had given her by getting a new home that is all hers, so that she could find herself with no one else around. Chris also retreats away from his family by cutting all ties with them and going on the road to live on his own. He even gives himself a new name, “Alexander Supertramp” , to symbolize that he wanted to leave behind all the control society had on him when he was Chris McCandless. Chris wanted to see if he could survive without society looking over his shoulder; controlling his every move and telling him what he can and cannot do with his life. Chris wanted to be his own boss just as Edna did. Both of these characters disagreed with society’s control, but they still wanted to socialize before their final adventures took place. They ultimately wanted to be one with nature; which society had no influence over. Edna disliked society so much because it declared that she needed to be the perfect
