Passive voice is used if the subject of a sentence is non-specific or not useful information. For example: People o People have eaten mustard for thousands of years. -> Mustard has been eaten for thousands of years. Someone o Someone left mustard on the table. -> Mustard was left on the table. Workers o Workers erected a fence to protect the statue. -> A fence was erected to protect the statue. Also you can use the passive when you don’t want to focus attention (or blame) on the person
