March 31, 2011 Lecture – Chapter 11: Episodes, Contexts, and Intercultural Interactions I. Social Episodes Pg. 275 – interaction sequences that are repeated over and over again Ex. Sitting in class – we do the same things over and over again (student sits, teacher speaks) Repetitive and predictable, routine, regular, etc When we add culture into the picture, routines/things can change very unexpectedly. . Regular routines can change depending on the culture we live in Ex. Professor Kuo has a specific way of teaching because of her background, but if we go to another teacher’s classroom – they may teach differently and we have to adapt to the different styles II.
