Study Guide Chapter 19 – Air Pollution 1. When thinking about the atmosphere you need to correctly sequence the layers from innermost to outermost. Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, and Thermosphere. The atmosphere is dived into these spherical layers based on temperature changes from variations in absorption of solar energy. 2. The atmospheric layer containing 75% of the mass of the earth’s air is the troposphere. If the earth were an apple, then the lower layer of the atmosphere would be the thickness of the skin. Most of the earth’s weather occurs in the troposphere. 3. The troposphere differs from the stratosphere in that it has 1,000 times less ozone by volume. Stratospheric ozone is good ozone. This ozone - screens out ultraviolet radiation - allowed the evolution of life on land - prevents ozone from forming in the troposphere - helps protect humans from sunburns and cataracts. 4. There is increasing evidence that humans are increasing ozone in the troposphere and decreasing ozone in the stratosphere. Ozone in the troposphere contributes to the formation of smog. Smog is defined as 5. The major classes of outdoor pollutants found in the troposphere include - carbon dioxides, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and photochemical oxidants. 6. According to the WHO, one in every 5 persons live in urban areas with air that is unhealthy to breath. 7. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are all carbon based ---- Examples of VOC’s include methane, chlorofluorocarbons, benzine, propane, Ethylene glycol Formaldehyde Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large group of carbon-based chemicals that easily evaporate at room temperature. While most people can smell high levels of some VOCs, other VOCs have no odor. Odor does not indicate the level of risk from inhalation of this group of chemicals.
