Homework 2 Ling 120 B—Moulton Due date: 7 October 2011 1 Building a Tree Draw a tree for the following sentence, and give a constituency test for every phrase you posit. Don’t forget to use coordination tests. If you don’t feel justified in labelling some category, say so (but this shouldn’t stop you from discovering constituents). ( 1 ) The teacher gave those extremely helpful notes to this student of physics in trouble . 2 Constituency ( 2 ) Sue’s younger sisters should go to the market together For the following substrings, apply at least 3 tests that establish if the substring is a constituent or not. You can safely conclude some string is not a constituent if it fails all tests including the coordination test. State what test your are applying and state what the results of your tests are. Note any problems you may encounter.
