Defining Marketing 2 Defining Marketing What is marketing? What is the definition of marketing? Marketing is a set of processes used to spread the word about a product or service. This is usually done through commercials, ads in paper, flyers, billboards and many other sources. Personal Definition of Marketing Marketing is using the means available to get the word out on a product or service which your company is offering. If I am offering a product or service I want the consumer to know about I use marketing to get the information to them. There are many ways to do this sales, advertising, promotional items. Definition of Marketing from Knowthis.com KnowThis.com defines marketing as “the strategies and tactics used to identify, create, and maintain satisfying relationships with customers that result in value for both the customer and the marketer” (KnowThis.com 2009, p. 3). The main things we learn from this are tactics and strategies are the key in being successful with customers. Knowthis.com says it is important to have strong tactics and strategies as these are the foundations to making a marketing campaign successful as well as the longevity of a product.

Defining Marketing 3 American Marketing Association (AMA) – Definition of Marketing The American Marketing Association (AMA) defines marketing as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large” (AMA, 2007). They believe that marketing will link the customer to the company or product.
