Hist 17C Lecture 5.02 Vietnam and the Antiwar Movement Segment III Dissenting during the “American Century” MLK preaching during Montgomery bus boycott (1955) o Gave one of his major speeches o “we aren’t wrong in what we are doing….” Constructing chain of legitimacy going all the way up to God Critics saw the gov’t as the source of injustice o “Fuck the draft” American people shared common identity and common problems o Sexual, economical, political, etc o Social and cultural fragmentation Vietnam War Themes: o Domestic politics and perceptions about them played a major role in pushing the US gov’t to escalate the VN war o VN war in turn, profoundly transformed US domestic affairs Background: o 1940’s-1950;s Ho Chi Minh led Vietminh struggle against French colonial rule They were communists VN divided at the 17 th parallel Viet Minh in the North Pro- US gov’t in the South Geneva Conference (1954) Suppose to be an election But because the US gov’t became convinced that if an election were to be held, the Vietminh would win so they did not support the election US treated the second bottom half as a separate nation 1960- NLF aka Vietcong took up arms against pro-US South Vietnamese
