History 17C Lecture 5.23.2011 Spring 1983- Regan proposed Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), aka “Star Wars” Summer 1983- Soviets shot down Korean passenger airline; killing 269 o Mistook it for a spy plane Fall 1983- the most dangerous moment in the new Cold War 1979- soviet union had invaded Afghanistan 1980- CIA worked covertly with Saudi and Pakistani gov’t to recruit young men from across Muslin world to join Mujahidin resisting Soviet invasion of Afghanistan o Continued what Carter administration was doing o Important items: stinger missiles Could shoot down helicopters 1980’s- Osama Bin Laden took part in effort to oust Soviet Union from Afghanistan- was working in parallel with US Turnover in the Kremlin o Succession of leaders came and went in the Soviet Union o Gorbachev reorganized the dire state of the Soveit Union economy and society Soviet life expectancy was lower than before Low morale Weird for an industrialized nation Economy was really bad Pushed for perestroika (restructuring) and glasnost (openness) Called for the US to renew talks about arms control
