Chapter 25: Africa and the Atlantic World Songhay Empire o Dominant empire that took over after the Mali empire weakened o Built a flourishing city-state as early as the 8 th century o 1464- Sunni Ali (ruler) conquered neighboring cities to consolidate his the Songhay Empire Brought important trading cities of Timbuktu and Jenne under his control Constructed an elaborate administration and military apparatus Niger River important for trade and traveling in the empire o Emperors were all Muslim and built schools to teach the Quran Never abandoned traditional religious practices o Fall of the Empire Last great imperial state of the grassland 1591- Moroccans defeated the invincible Songhay military machine After the attack, subject people too advantage and revolted against Songhay domination When the empire crumbled, a series of small regional kingdoms and city-states emerged in the W.Africa Kingdom of Kongo* o The best known principal state in central Africa o Emerged in the 14 th century o Rulers built a centralized state with officials overseeing military, judicial, and financial affairs o 1483- built relations with Portuguese who supplied the king with a lot of goods
