Chapter 30: Mexican-American War: o Because TX wanted to join the US as a new state o Also known as the North American Intervention/ War of 1847 o US instigated the war and inflicted punishing defeat on Mexican army Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo US took possession of approx. one half of Mexico’s territory, paying $15 million in exchange for TX north of the Rio Grande, CA, and New Mexico Dominion of Canada: o Consisting of Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick Joined by the British North America Act of 1867 o Britain granted independence to Canada due to fear of US expansion and violence o Each province had its own gov’t principle legislature and lieutenant governor (rep of the British crown) o Without waging war, the D of C had won all control over Canadian internal affairs and Britain retained foreign affairs until 1931 Caudillos: o Regional military leaders that came to power in much of Latin America
