Chapter 18 Managing Change Learning Points: 1. Don’t make changes just for the sake of making change. Too much change in a system is just as frustrating to employees as the feeling that any change is impossible. Think through the pros and cons of any change very carefully before taking action. For some people making changes has more to do with their own need to impact the system than the needs of the system. 2. Trust is an important aspect of any change project. Often clients do not make significant movement until they begin to trust the consultant(s) involved. Employees do not believe management’s new visions for the future unless their trust has been won. Trust allows people to unfreeze and move. Therefore, it’s very important that managers do not make promises they cannot keep. I. Two Forms of Change in Organizations A. Planned Change: Change results from a deliberate decision to alter the organization – from a traditional hierarchical structure to self-managed teams with proactive, carefully orchestrated approach. B. Unplanned Change: Unforeseen and unpredictable, e.g. change in
