Breanna Jameson ANT 2410-1 15 October 2010 1. Separation Phase The first step to separation is when the mamul kill pigs or cassowaries. However, for the Kaluli all deaths are caused by seis . This initiates the retribution against the specific sei that attacked the dead Kaluli. A sei is a living man who has a shadow creature or witch-child living inside of him, and they usually attack people who are not kin with them. Physical disability and high fever are marks of a sei attack. The sei makes his kill when his victim is seriously weakened from an illness and therefore to finish the deed he pulls out his victim’s heart (Schieffelin 2005: 100-101). The deathly ill person, and only in this state can he see the human form of the sei , will tell their kin who the sei is that is killing them and therefore spark their kin to reciprocate an attack (Schieffelin 2005: 101). The group that suffered the loss will mount a raid to kill the specified sei . The
