Pivot Tables PivotTable Basics A PivotTable is a powerful summary tool o PivotTables won’t update automatically when the underlying data is changed – you have to choose to refresh the data (unless you use an Excel table as the underlying data; when you add new rows to the table, Excel will automatically update the PivotTable) Creating a PivotTable Click within the data that you want to summarize using a PivotTable Insert – Table – PivotTable Layout the PivotTable o The PivotTable Field List will appear on the right side of the screen All fields are shown, which can then be added to the following areas: Report Filter Column Labels Row Labels Values To add a field to any of the areas, drag the field to the area, or right-click and select the appropriate area PivotTable contextual tabs o Options o Design Limitations of PivotTables o You can’t add rows/columns or modify formulas in the PivotTable Working with PivotTables Value Field Settings
