Chapter 8: Organization -a system of consciously coordinated activities or forces of two or more people. Chester I. Barnard Three types of organizations: -For Profit -formed to make money, or profits by offering products or services - Nonprofit -offer services to some clients not to make a profit (hospitals, colleges) - Mutual Benefit -Voluntary collectives whose purpose is to advance members’ interests (unions, trade associations) Organization chart -box and lines illustration showing the formal lines of authority and the organizations official positions or work specializations. -Vertical hierarchy of authority -Who reports to whom, the chain of command. Shows the official communication network. -Horizontal Specialization -who specializes in what work, different departments, marketing, finance, etc. Four Common elements of an organization-according to, Edgar Scheim - Common Purpose -unifies employees or members and gives everyone an understanding of the organizations reason for being. - Coordinated Effort -the coordination of individual efforts into a group or organization wide effort. People working better together for a common purpose is better than individuals working alone - Division of Labor-Work specialization , the arrangement of having discrete parts of a task done by different people. An organization can parcel out the entire complex work effort to be performed by specialists, resulting in greater efficiency. - Hiearchy of authority-chain of command , control mechanism for making sure the right people do the right things at the right time. Authority is most effective when organized in a hierarchy. - Unity of command -employees should report to no more than one manager in order to avoid conflicting priorities and demands. Not true today though because of technology, sometimes you need to communicate with more than one manager. Common elements:
