WHY DO I HAVE TO KNOW  IT? Sentence combination is important to you  as a writer for many reasons. 1.  Writers are able to attract and keep an audience  when their sentences are varied. Sentence  combination will help you keep the audience  informed, entertained, interested in your topic,  etc.  No one, especially your TEACHERS,  wants to read essays and papers where every  sentence looks the same and is 8-10 words  long.

WHY DO I HAVE TO KNOW  IT? (CONT.) Sentence combination is important to you  as a writer for many reasons. 2. When sentences are combined incorrectly, the  results are usually run-ons or comma splices.  Combining sentences correctly will help to avoid  these errors.  Once again, your TEACHERS  will not look kindly on these mistakes!

WHY DO I HAVE TO KNOW  IT? (CONT.) Sentence combination is important to you  as a writer for many reasons. 3. Some ideas belong together. Combining your  sentences will help you establish continuity and  balance in your writing.  Again, your teachers  want to see grammar that is correct, but they  also want you to establish your own voice and  style.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT  WAYS TO COMBINE  SENTENCES? There are four ways to combine any two  complete sentences.  These four are  usually  interchangeable, but only  because they perform the same function. You   may find one way to be easier than the others, or  one may prove to be more appropriate to the  writing you  do.  These four do not require the same punctuation,  connectors, and order as each other. Be sure to  keep the process involved for each clear in your  mind as you use them.

TWO EXAMPLE  SENTENCES Here are the two sentences that will be  used for each method: Sentence #1: The tornado was moving quickly  across the field. Sentence #2: The family sought shelter in the  basement.

1 Commas + Coordinating  Conjunctions Why can  commas +  coordinating conjunctions   combine complete sentences?  Remember, the job of a conjunction is to combine  ideas/items in writing.  Coordinating conjunctions   combine entire sentences—they coordinate the two  sentences.  What are  coordinating conjunctions ?
