EDSP210. Journal #1. Casey Gresh KWL – what you know, what you want to know, and what you learn K --- I already know that special education deal with individuals who have disabilities. Last class I learned that the term used for these individuals is developmental delay. I also learned that special educators have to concentrate on the parents of these individuals as much as the actual individuals. I found it interesting that something as seemingly trivial as the placement of words in a sentence makes a big difference to these people. This is something that makes the job that much harder because it forces the educator to think about the small details that are typically overlooked. Ie. “children with autism” rather than “autistic children” because rather than identifying the children by their disability,

I am considering either switching my major from psychology to special education or minoring in special education. Specifically regarding special education, I want to specialize in how to help children put their feeling into words who are physically incapable of expressing themselves. L --- I like learning in group activities and discussions. I like to hear what other people have to say and compare their opinions to mine. I want to demonstrate what I learn in reflections and assignments like journals....
