Coming up with Examples for Language Terms 1. Give examples of three words or expressions you use that your parents don’t understand. (keep it clean!) Swag – a certain flair; stunning – gorgeous; ‘sick’ – great; TMI – too much information; LOL – laughing out loud; off the chain – cool; crack – addictive Term: colloquialisms 2. Give three examples of words you have heard in other parts of the country that are not used in this area. ( term = regionalisms) Pop – soda – coke Subs – hoagies – po’ boys- Biggies – big Nikes, etc… Hoopdie – big old junky car (bunket) Subway, metro Bubbler – water fountain Schlep – to carry, to lug, to take along, to go Chutzpah - nerve 3. Give three examples of words you use that people outside your job or major wouldn’t understand. ( term = jargon) ETA – estimated time of arrival Advance organizers – previews Shakers – glasses (in restaurants) NPO – nothing by mouth BID – twice a day PC – after meals PC – politically correct
