Key for Micro Exam 4 Question 1 Question 1: Pick the species which is a free radical and exists as resonance structures: Answers: (a) nitrogen dioxide (b) nitrite ion (c) nitrate ion (d) perchlorate ion (e) benzene (f) sodium chloride (g) more than one of these A free radical is a species which has an unpaired electron. Free radicals are highly reactive as they seek to complete the pairing of their electrons. We need to draw the Lewis dot structures of the various compounds listed in order to determine which is a free radical. Additionally, we can readily determine resonance by drawing the Lds’s of the compounds as well. Resonance refers to the displacement of electrons across a molecule. In other words, the electrons can move about the species and are not confined to one particular bond. But before we draw the compounds, we have to know the formulas for each. Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) Since nitrogen has 5 valence electrons (it’s the fifth element in the third row of the periodic table), we know that that is how many
