Giddens – Structuration Theory Trying to resolve the structure / agency  debate in sociology Structure  = external factors that constrain our  actions (scientific) Agency  = our power to control or change our  surroundings (humanistic) Structuration overcomes this divide: we create  social structures that in turn constrain our  actions
