Homework 4 An actor is rehearsing for the new Conan movie. He is using a sword that weighs 6N. He holds the sword upright at the center of mass of his hands. What is external torque on the glenohumeral joint (Force on the deltoid tendon)? What are the reaction forces at the shoulder (Rx and Ry)? Remember the deltoid tendon forms an angle of 15 degrees with the humerus and attaches at a point on the humerus 0.12m away from the shoulder. The same actor wants to look more intimidating so he is in the fitting room trying out new swords.

If the tendon has a cross-sectional area of 4 cm 2 , and the weight of the sword increases by 1N with a 1 cm increase in sword length, and the original sword was 90 cm long, 10 cm wide, and 6N in weight, how much longer is the largest sword that he can hold horizontally (see figure below).
