Summary of the EventThe events that happened marked our history, and our ancestor’s struggles inachieving freedom, the opposition towards Western Imperialism, Political Dynasty, andtheir insistent resistance that surely caused inspiration to Filipino Revolutionaries.Historical CriticismDuring the Spanish Colonization the Sulu Sultanate thrived in the Southern partof the Philippines. The geographical location of Sulu was the main reason why maritimeraiding was the main mode of warfare between the Moros and the Spanish. Maritimeraiding helped strengthen the Moros through slave gathering and trading, this method isalso used to resist Spaniards converting them into Christians.This struggle by the Spaniards in containing Southern Philippines lead them to takedrastic actions by labelling all Moro raids as piracy. In 1754, governor-general, MarquisFrancisco José, proposed the conquest of Mindanao to end 'piracy and great evils' thatis hurting the Spanish Colony.In 1848 a large Spanish expedition including three English steamboats attacked anddestroyed settlements in the island of Balangingi in Sulu. The destruction of Balangingiis the beginning of the end of the Maritime Raids in the Southern parts of thePhilippines. Compared to the other actions of the Spaniards, this expedition issuccessful in reducing the activities of the raiders and slave trading.
