Summary of the Event The events that happened marked our history, and our ancestor’s struggles in achieving freedom, the opposition towards Western Imperialism, Political Dynasty, and their insistent resistance that surely caused inspiration to Filipino Revolutionaries. Historical Criticism During the Spanish Colonization the Sulu Sultanate thrived in the Southern part of the Philippines. The geographical location of Sulu was the main reason why maritime raiding was the main mode of warfare between the Moros and the Spanish. Maritime raiding helped strengthen the Moros through slave gathering and trading, this method is also used to resist Spaniards converting them into Christians. This struggle by the Spaniards in containing Southern Philippines lead them to take drastic actions by labelling all Moro raids as piracy. In 1754, governor-general, Marquis Francisco José, proposed the conquest of Mindanao to end 'piracy and great evils' that is hurting the Spanish Colony. In 1848 a large Spanish expedition including three English steamboats attacked and destroyed settlements in the island of Balangingi in Sulu. The destruction of Balangingi is the beginning of the end of the Maritime Raids in the Southern parts of the Philippines. Compared to the other actions of the Spaniards, this expedition is successful in reducing the activities of the raiders and slave trading.
