Course Objectives: 1.) To survey art from prehistory through the early second millennium CE, considering: the creation of artifacts and works of art within social, religious, political, and historical contexts their meaning within those contexts and our own the various techniques by which they were made their artistic styles and formal elements 2.) To introduce students to the conventions and methodologies of the discipline of art history 3.) To refine students’ skills in observation and critical thinking 4.) To improve students’ verbal expression—oral and written II. Procedures: 1.) Slide presentation with lecture and class discussion 2.) Discussion of reading assignments 3.) Writing assignments—in and out of class 4.) Screening and discussion of films 5.) Class fieldtrip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art 6.) Individual fieldtrip to the Wilmington Library III. Student Requirements: 1.) Read EVERYDAY. Complete all reading assignments the day they are due. Come to class prepared to discuss what you have read. 2.) Complete all in-class and out-of-class assignments promptly and submit them when due. There are severe penalties for lateness. (See “Grading Practices” below.) NB: On average, you will be expected to do two hours of work outside of class for every hour of class time , not including field trips. This is an average. For some students the work will take longer; during some weeks, the assignments will be longer. Don’t get behind.
