Brock English 102 5 Aug 2011 Rhetorical Analysis of Diversity's False Solace In his essay "Diversity's False Solace", Walter Benn Michaels argues that affirmative action and ethnic diversity in public universities creates a false sense of equality. He states that affirmative action only provides comfort for the rich who go to college. He argues that cultural diversity in college only helps the rich feel that they are not in higher education based on having a head start. Michaels states that economic inequality, not racism is the biggest barrier to higher education. He argues that affirmative action gives the right wing false basis to say that the entrance to university education is equal and that the left wing is not focusing on the right solution to the problem of inequality. Michaels utilizes an appeal to logic and ethos to persuade his audience. The intended audience of this essay is the left wing and people who are interested in an equal
