3/31 Questions for Mertz and Phillips-  conducted   ethnographic research in a law  school classroom/ conducted ethnographic research on Warm Springs Indian  Reservation children at school with white children. Metaphragmatic: The set of social and cultural understandings that informs in the ways we understand  how language operates in particular contexts. Socratic Method:  The professor addresses a series of questions to a single student.  How is it a form of performance? He is performing and wanting to show that he is superior and can put on an act to his  audience or his student. Overall: What are law professors trying to teach law students— other than simply what’s in the textbooks—by teaching in the  particular way they do?  They are showing them how to be a lawayer Students must learn not to focus on the history and the politics and emotional  importance of the situation but to inquire only as to whether the events fit the prescribed  legal tests.  Metagraphically teaches the students how to use what they learn as lawyers.
