S09 Exam 3 Study Guide 1. What is perception. -The collection of processes used to arrive at a meaningful interpretation of sensation 2. What is sensation? -The elementary components, or building blocks, of an experience (such as taste, or a change in temperature) 3. Why is the wavelength of reflected light important? -The wavelength of reflected light determines the hue, which is the dimension of light that produces color. 4. How is brightness perceived? -The perceived brightness increases as the intensity of the light increase. 5. Know the path of a light wave as it enters the eye. -Through the cornea then the pupil then the lens 6. What is the fovea? -The “central pit” area in the retina where the cone receptors are located. 7. What is the optic nerve? -Where the visual signals eventually leave the retina through a collection of nerve fibers. It consists of 1 million axons that wrap together to form a kind of visual transmission cable. 8. What is the iris? The lens? -The iris is the ring of the center of the eye that allows light to enter. -The lens is the flexible piece of tissue that helps focus light toward the back of the eye. 9. What do rods do? Cones? -Rods are receptors cells in the retina, located mainly around the sides ,that transduce light energy into neural messages; these visual receptors are highly sensitive and are active in dim light. -Cones are receptors cells in the central portion of the retina that transduce light energy into neural messages; and they are primarily responsible for th ability to sense color.
