PART II Major theme: With slavery ended and south now more firmly under federal  control, Republicans extend their goal of building a strong nation and allowing  free men to pursue their economic inters to the West and consolidate federal  power over the entire continent Descruction of Native Americans Wanted the land in West  At first deult with the Indians in different ways Had white settlers protected by troops that were near the Indians Americans always trying to get the land Make treaties But with the language barriers didn’t always communicate completely correctly ex: Santee, deal with Americans  Felt exploded and upset because they had cheated him and his people He goes on a rampage killing many Americans Americans then condemn over 300 of the Native Americans to death Lincoln comes in and stops most but 38 the Indians still condemned to death Allows them to have trial But find out later that some of them were innocent  Massive execution of Mankato, Minnesota 1862 Other examples of conflict with Indians and Americans Wounded Knee South Dakota 1890
