CONCEPT:   Opposite the conservative and Christian defense of an older  America  in the 1920 stood a frantic celebration of the individual hero free to  pursue happiness and wealth in the market, buy new consumer products  or even  fly the Atlantic.  This celebration of individual pursuits would lead directly to a  catastrophic crash of the stock market in 1929. Two Opinions about WWI 1. (conservative - Right) People saw it as going against our small town ideals  and isolationism. People thought that the changes in world war 1 were to  drastic. (direction Country went in right after war aka lecture 10) 2. (liberal – Left)Others saw it is big government asserting its power. People  forced to put support behind government. Gov’t oppresses people who  oppose the war or draft. a. Through out the 20’s there was this idea to let private enterprise go, let  people be free to pursue there wealth and let government stay out of  the way. b. Private enterprise: free men in a free economy is the only way were are  going to prosper and make America better c. Individualism is asserted in a way to say that the less government the  better This extreme pursuit of individualism and enterprise(people turning  individualism into wealth), is going to lead to the economic collapse Charles Lindbergh  Gates, buffet, Oprah: successful as individuals Lindbergh became an American Hero in 1927 when he flew across the  Atlantic Ocean alone in 1927-New York to Paris in 33 hours. Symbol of  American Individualism A wealthy businessman from NYC had offered a $25,000 prize for the first  one to do it.  Six died trying before Lindbergh.
